Cutting Ball's World Premiere of Tontlawald is a mash up of inspirations, grounded in fascination.
The story is loosely based on an Estonian fairy tale that Associate Artistic Director Paige Rogers discovered from her son‘s first grade teacher.
This intersected with a trip to Poland’s Teatr ZAR, resident company of theater director Jerzy Grotowski. Grotowski was a friend and collaborator of Tanzteater’s Pina Bausch and shared her passion for letting the essential elements of theater (actors, music, dance) evolve the story.
Rogers and a range of co-creators illuminate an unfamiliar tale with multidimensional elements, using a chorally gifted cast to deliver an immersive experience. A capella music ranges from jazz standards to spirited duwop. (Think Kitka…with boys! ) The vocals are so addictive, I found myself pining for the barbershop-style section changes in order to be soothed all over again.
Definitely a departure for Cutting Ball as well as a risk. Is it perfect? No, but that’s beside the point. Innovation doesn’t happen without risk, so if you’re game to transcend the predictable, Tontlawald is definitely for you.
Now through March 11 at San Francisco's Cutting Ball Theater.
Ensemble members (top) Sam Gibbs and (bottom) Wiley Naman Strasser play in the Tontlawald, while the Ensemble watches.

If you slept through World History, here’s the crash course.
Cool photos and commentary on, you guessed it, 100 objects. Globally sourced, they now live in the British Museum of History and each one has a multi-layered story...from the handaxe to the credit card. Here’s another hint: sex, drugs and war feature prominently.
A little hefty @ 600+ pages, it’s actually a quick read that will make you look like the quirky genius you are.

Poking fun @ the hypocrisy of the Hippocratic set, BRT’s bawdy romp through Moliere’s beloved farce is just as relevant 325 years later.
Accompanied by an awesome 2-person “band” and a troupe of sassy puppets, there’s singing, dancing and T&A jokes galore.
Great choice for girls night out after a tipple in the lobby or a couple blocks over @ Five’s (Hotel Shattuck) excellent Happy Hour.
Here are my top 5, feel free to add your own!
5. Julia Briskman & Allen Gilmore’s mashed up rendition of Big Butts & Rapper’s Delight
4. Chivas Michael as a purpled, pompadour-ed dandy a la Prince circa 1984
3. Jacob Ming-Trent and Liam Craig as rumply, bumbling minions
2. Renata Friedman's snarly sneer as the “Icky Sick Person”
1. Steven Epp & Justine Williams as the most hilarious bickering couple since Al & Peg Bundy
Allen Gilmore and Jacob Ming-Trent (left) star in A Doctor in Spite of Himself.

Although not quite the sensation (or the stampedes) that accompanied the Missoni launch, the new Jason Wu collection is mostly sold out in stores. Perhaps learning a lesson from past server crashes, Target is only offering the most popular pieces in store.
Not to worry--if there’s ever been a collection to sit out, it’s this one. Many of the pieces look totally recycled from other collections--pointelle cardi (Rodarte), colorblock dresses (Jonathan Saunders), printed lace t-shirts (Behnaz Sarafpour).
Many pieces are an icky poly fabric that doesn't even try to pretend it's faux silk. I initially got excited about the scarves--the signature Milu kitty and spring-y prints trimmed in stripes are lovely. Reality doesn't match up, though--they're too huge (42" x 42") to be worn casually and would have looked much better in a smaller size on realy silk.
The shirt dress silhouettes looked promising, but the 70s throwback poly jersey is ugh.
Two pieces I did like were the amber fuzzy top (looks more like dark lemon to me) and the sailor stripe sweater. Both feature quality fabric and would make excellent travel pieces. Bonus: the amber top has signature Wu pleating @ the neckline...wear it and channel your inner Michelle Obama!
Also like the black and white dresses--somewhat stiff fabric over a lay petticoat, so would make a great "tea" or afternoon wedding dress.
Skip the other ones, though. Especially the ones w/sewn on pearls.
Ditto for the lace print trim trench--looks great in the photo, but the fabric is a cheap-y, unlined cotton canvas that looks permanently wrinkled. Ick.

Microgestures lead to immersive kinetics & naked need. Next is never enough.
One more chance (tomorrow night) to catch this beautiful, glossy haired group @ ODC.
Video, lighting and original score stand on their own. Sublime.
Check out the gorgeous underwater video photos from Taso Papadakis.
