It was a dark and stormy night in Sydney, making the walk over the hill and past the bridge to Roslyn Packer Theater even more challenging.
So worth the effort to see this exceptionally talented young company dance their hearts out in two exquisitely choreographed pieces.
The first was a revival from Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela. (He also gave the welcome at the beginning that included a respectfully sincere acknowledgement of ancestors, present and emerging Aboriginal peoples as well as any First Nation audience members.) He describes the motivation behind the piece as being the eternal struggle of being two places at once. The dancers' taut, energetic presence, accompanied by an incredible string quartet, made this piece one for the memory and dream banks.
Ditto for the second piece, a completely different experience, both musically and choreographically. The relentless intensity of the piece was incredible and only interrupted by an interlude in slow motion that sounded like a deconstructed video game.
Running for one more week...do not miss!
