Part horror story, part historical fiction, Whitehead's latest book is based on reporting on the real Dozier reform school in Florida. Long closed amid rumors of corruption and abuse, the unearthing of a field of bones generated renewed interest on survivors.
Although Whitehead readily admits he never walked the expanses he describes so perfectly, his talent in creating a sense of place is masterful. That and the weaving in of quotes from MLK make this a book to consider and cherish.
